.....In the last issue, we gave you a taste of what TGS (Technology Green Solutions) has on offer in the way of energy-efficient appliances and technology to make your life cheaper, easier, less harmful to the environment and to help you substantially cut down on your CO2 emissions. This applies whether you are a private individual, or run a large or small business.

In terms of hot water, you can achieve an astounding 95 per cent reduction in electricity costs if you use the threefold combination of the integrated hot water system, heat-pump and air-conditioning heat recovery system.

a) Solar thermal
The most cost-efficient and affordable way to capture sunlight and heat your water is based on three components: the solar collector, circulation pump and solar storage tank.
The flat panel, roof-mounted solar collectors are the most efficient worldwide and use the latest state-of-the-art technology. They feature:
l Sun select coating which gives an absorption level of 95 per cent;
l Robust, tempered glass, allowing a light-transmittance of 88 per cent;
l All-weather efficiency, producing temperatures of 95°C, even in the rainy season;
l Highly durable, lightweight, minimal-corrosion aluminium construction and thermal insulation ensure longevity and minimal heat loss;
l Easy installation.
The solar storage tanks developed by TGS are made of highly durable, high-density PE plastic, which are much cheaper that comparable steel or aluminium tanks and their high insulation also guarantees a minimal heat loss. The piping is also ultra-efficient polyurethane-aluminium composite, totally compatible with the system and has a 20-30 year lifetime. Using a closed, fluid-circulation system, no bacteria is released into the water itself.
Briefly, the sun heats the fluid in the collector to a specific temperature, after which the fluid begins to circulate, assisted by the circulation pump. Reaching the solar tank, the integral heat exchanger transmits the heat from the fluid to the water, for use in showers, baths, washing machines etc.
Although this system is adequate for domestic use, commercial users will probably wish to integrate it into existing heating systems.
b) Solar Photovoltaic (PV) systems
A variety of PV solutions are available from TGS, according to customers’ requirements. The high quality panels used are of the amorphous silicon type, as opposed to crystalline panels, which are much less suitable for Southeast Asian climatic conditions, as the amorphous silicon type gives a 25 per cent higher annual energy yield. The TGS PV panels are consistent with those used in international World Bank projects in renewable energy. The TGS PV panels are maintenance-free, thus ensuring low running costs and have a long-life guarantee. Details of government subsidies for PV systems are available from TGS.
Super-efficient second generation heat pumps
For hot water applications from 30- 85 degrees or even higher for commercial applications.
TGS supplies Quantum Energy Titan compact high performance hot water heat pumps, which are admirably suited to commercial and public applications, such as those in condominiums, laundries, hospitals, hotels and resorts, delivering ultra high-efficiency, and substantial cost-savings with a minimal environmental impact.
Because the heating coils are not immersed in the water to be heated, Quantum heaters are corrosion- and scale-free. The sizes vary from 150-1,020 litre storage capacity for domestic applications, and thousands of litres for commercial applications can be used as stand-alone units, or in multiple banks.
Taking the 340 litre model as an example, this has a 6-8kw capacity, and can deliver significant volumes of 60°C hot water at up 75 per cent reduction in electricity costs.
There is a substantial saving in terms of energy usage, and therefore costs, with a considerably higher kWh output and reduced kWh input than conventional hot water heaters.
For example, compared with conventional hot water heaters, the Quantum Energy Titan 340 can deliver an annual cost saving of US$2,400 (approx Bt85,000)!
Commercial clients can take advantage of TGS’s computer simulations to make their whole energy systems ultra-efficient and TGS will provide guidance as to how best to integrate these ‘green’ technology products into their existing hot water heating systems.
Ornamental garden applications
TGS manufactures a host of ornamental solar products, largely based around their solar pumps with a large amount of applications for the driveway and garden. TGS have been making these pumps for the past 12 years and thus have a vast amount of experience in terms of design and reliability.
All products carry a two-year guarantee and because of their highly attractive design are certain to arouse a considerable amount of interest and comment from the neighbours, who, once having seen the products in operation, will want to acquire similar products for themselves.
The solar pumps operate in direct sunlight, charging the battery of the appliance during the day, making it possible to run them 24/7.
The pumps have three nozzles, hi-tech filters, are high-efficiency, with a low power consumption and require little maintenance. Being able to rotate the solar panels, they can also optimise solar harnessing.
The different applications include:
l Air pumps to oxygenate ponds, via two or four air stones;
l Dove or frog ground level fountains, mounted on single ceramic bowls;
l Single or double-tiered birdbath fountains, made of resin or ceramic material;
l Sunny solar aquatic ‘lily’ fountain pump sets for ponds;
l Multiple-bowl cascades in terracotta or ceramic.
All the above are highly durable and attractive, making perfect gifts for one’s ‘significant other’, family or friends.
The other ornamental items are external light fixtures:
l Path lights in 4 colours, plus a changing colour model. These are set in the driveway, and automatically activate at dusk, giving useful guidance for returning vehicles or pedestrians;
l Magic-sphere – these attractive globes colour-rotate through a spectrum of 10 colours, or can be set on one alone. They can be placed atop gateposts, placed in the garden, or even floated in a pool or pond;
l Spotlights and super bright LEDS, with similar features to the above.

Other applications
Other applications supplied or made by TGS include air-conditioning waste heat recyclers, which harness the exhaust heat from the air-con compressor to be used for water heating.
